This module bridges the gap between architectural understanding and real-world application. It explores early trials, proofs-of-concept, and production deployments of software-defined production tools, highlighting the reasoning behind each approach, the current lessons learned from early experimenting, and the benefits achieved in practice.

Rather than remaining at a conceptual level, the focus shifts towards implementation and experimentation. It also provides guidance on how to prepare for the transition by progressively developing practical competence across the full stack.

Gain familiarity with key technologies, including Linux system operations, containerisation, lightweight orchestration with k3s or Kubernetes, and media flow concepts such as the Media eXchange Layer (MXL). Through this, they will begin to understand how compute, networking, and media exchange interact in a distributed system.

The emphasis is on incremental learning through experimentation: starting small, iterating quickly, and building confidence in operating software-defined infrastructure. The goal is to move from understanding the principles of DMF to actively working with the technologies that enable it.
