Tony Howard, B.Sc C.Eng MIET

Tony has a degree in Electronic Engineering & Physics from Loughborough (“Lufburra”)
University of Technology (UK) and is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institution
of Engineering and Technology (UK) and a member of SMPTE.
Tony has been working in the broadcasting industry for 39 years with the last 20 years in
Canada, following the path of one company which is now MediaKind. He has worked in:
 Television transmitter systems
 Telemetry and control
 Video and audio processing
 Customer Support management
 Sales Engineering
Finding his forte in:
 Compression based systems - starting in 1990 with ETSI 34 Mbps codecs and now
delivering 4K UHD HDR in HEVC.
Tony has been instrumental in installing many first-of-type leading edge compression
systems over the years.
After emigrating to Canada in 2001 Tony has focused on Sales Engineering for
Compression based products and systems which now includes quoting and delivering
Streaming based solutions for the new data-centre and cloud based media delivery
environments.

Roundtable Topic: What do you think it will take to be a broadcaster in the future?

Description: "The industry is rapidly migrating to new media delivery mechanisms and how content is processed and consumed. We will consider some of these factors such as:
- Support of cloud-based delivery – fully deployed cloud based workflow from production, editing, MCR, playout, on-demand and live (does anybody remember Linear TV?)
- End-to-end Streaming capability with low latency delivery and regional program insertion / advertising insertion
- Direct To Consumer Programming
- Event Driven Programming
- Influence of Social Media on Live Events
- Up conversion of older content to new formats"
