This SMPTE Club event will provide a behind-the-scenes look at some of the technological challenges in productions, and the approaches taken successfully to bring the creative visions to life. It will discuss the most exciting current technology innovations with the biggest impact on the filmmaking process, and how they impact the experiences for consumers in the theater and at home.

The technical director for Peter Jackson on “The Hobbit” trilogy, was the lead designer of the team for the award-winning High Frame Rate 3D pipeline – from on-set capture to cinema implementations.

Geoff Burdick

Senior Vice President, Production Services & Technology Lightstorm Entertainment

An L.A. native, Geoff Burdick received his degree in Film Studies from UC Santa Barbara, and has worked with Jim Cameron at Lightstorm Entertainment since 1990.
From documentaries such as “Ghosts of The Abyss,” “Aliens of the Deep” and “Deepsea Challenge” to features including “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “True Lies,” “Titanic,” “Avatar” and its upcoming sequels, Geoff has been intimately involved in the development and implementation of acquisition, post-production and exhibition solutions.

Working with various industry groups, he continues to help drive the advancement of cinema cameras, digital workflows, 3D, HDR, HFR and next-gen cinema technologies.

Ben Gervais

Technical Advisor- Ang Lee
A freelance technical supervisor, specializing in bringing new technologies to current motion picture processes. His most recent projects involve developing 120 fps production technology and post workflows for Ang Lee's "Gemini Man" and "Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk".
He was the first to use the Arri Alexa in 3D (on Hugo for Martin Scorsese), as well as the first to use the Alexa M in 3D (on The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet for Jean-Pierre Jeunet). Some of his other credits include X-Men: Days of Future Past, Crimson Peak, and Pacific Rim. Ben is a member of SMPTE, as well as an associate member of the ASC.

As Vice President of Technology at Warner Bros., Michael Zink is responsible for exploring emerging technologies to enhance WB’s capabilities for production, post-production, and distribution. This includes assessing new technologies; and assisting with the setup and integration of digital workflows. Michael also participates in a number of standards associations such as CTA, DCI, SMPTE, among others; and also serves as Chairman for the UHD Alliance. Prior to joining Warner Bros. in 2014, Michael worked at Technicolor for over 10 years, most recently as Vice President of Technology Strategy, where he was responsible for launching the production efforts around various new optical disc formats. Additionally, Michael was responsible for the promotion and adoption of Technicolor technology solutions within industry groups. Earlier in his career, he worked for several media production facilities in Germany.  

Stuart Bowling is Dolby’s Director, Content & Creative Relations, in this role Stuart is focused on helping to manage the pipeline of Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos content for all Dolby Cinema sites and Dolby Atmos sites globally. Stuart works closely with Filmmakers and Creatives to evangelize the benefits of finishing content in Dolby’s current and future technologies. Building relationships with key Filmmakers, Cinematographers, Colorists, Re Recording Mixers, while evangelizing the benefits of Native workflows, additionally leading emerging technology engagements across the Creative and Exhibition communities. Stuart has served prior Technical roles at Warner Bros International Theatres, Lucasfilm THX and drove the adoption of Dolby Surround 7.1 and was part of the core development team for Dolby Atmos. Named by Variety as a Hero of New Tech. Stuart has over 30 years of industry experience across Exhibition & Post Production fields.
